About

Born in Kolkata in a highly talented musical family, Saswatti was nourished by the strains of the sitar. Saswatti learned the basics of sitar playing from her mother, Ms. Shobha Ghosh (Kundu) a renowned sitarist of Kolkata and a disciple of Dr. Suresh Chandra Chakravarti Sangeet Shatri.

Her musical talents blossomed under the tutelage of a Rabindra Bharti University Prof. Shree Santosh Banerjee, a disciple of Ustad Dabir Khansaheb. He initiated her into the intricacies and techniques of sitar playing.

Besides sitar, Saswatti also excelled in academics. She received her B.A in philosophy from Kolkata University and her Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti. She also secured First Class First in Masters of Music (sitar) from Rabindra Bharati University.

The year 1986 was a turning point in Saswatti’s pursuit of excellence in music. That was the year when her path crossed that of a reclusive genius, Padmabhushan Dr. Annapurna Devi, the daughter of Padmabhibhushan Ustad Allauddin Khansaheb, BABA, the founder of Senia-Maihar Gharana

Dr. Annapurna Devi accepted Saswatti as one of her disciples, nurtured her talent and transformed her into a creative artist with depth maturity and a new understanding of aesthetics and musical compositions.

Now Saswatti is a much-in-demand sitarist who has performed at several music conferences and enthralled the Rasikas and critics alike. Her rendition of a raga is imaginative. She works within the raga structure and yet transcends it.

She is a regular broadcaster over the Mumbai station of All India Radio and is one of the first female sitarists to have played for films and TV serials under the baton of leading musical directors.

Today Saswatti’s music has a refined depth and maturity that only comes with over 30 years of dedicated effort towards her art. Saswatti is often seen sharing her knowledge about Indian Classical Music at international platforms through Live Concerts, Seminars and Workshops.

Saswatti’s professional Facebook channel has over 20,000 enthusiastic followers and music lovers from all across the globe, who often inquire about her next performance and concert details. She loves frequently interacting with budding musicians and people who love this genre, to encourage their passion in some way. She is often quoted saying that ‘Music is a language of peace that everybody should communicate in’.
